Daily Planning for Teachers

Daily planning for the classroom is an important part of the teaching and learning process. It is an effective way to hold our classrooms in a systematic and effective manner that will contribute extensively to our learner’s knowledge and in her holistic development. Daily planning helps educators be more effective in the classroom by providing a detailed outline to follow during the class.

Proper planning also helps us as educators to achieve our set learning outcomes and  helps us to design our learning objectives with more clarity and precision. Not only daily planning helps us to achieve our learning outcomes, it rather helps us to adopt the most suitable and effective techniques in our classroom, as it gives the educator more clarity of the concept/theme being done in the classroom.

In today’s time when the brick and mortar classrooms have turned into zoom or google meet classrooms, it becomes more important to plan on a daily basis. As, in the virtual setup there is a time restraint and with the limited time achieving all the set learning outcomes becomes difficult, albeit not impossible. With proper and adequate planning, we as educators can do wonders in our virtual classrooms just like we do in our brick and mortar classrooms.

Effective planning is the key to success, as daily and proper planning will help the educator integrate various domains and topics that will help the educator achieve more learning outcomes in the limited period of time. For example: In kindergarten, while introducing them to fruits and vegetables we can talk about its colour, about healthy and unhealthy food, about the beginning sounds, and about the beginning letters, that will help us cover many concepts in an integrated manner, saving a lot of time and enhancing our teaching- learning process. Well planned and organised planning will help the educator to ask relevant questions that will be theme/concept specific, focusing on the trans- disciplinary approach.

Daily planning will also enhance self- confidence at the time of deliverance by giving absolute clarity of the concept. Daily planning also helps the educators to evaluate her teaching and learning process with the set learning outcomes and will become a basis for reflection. Therefore daily planning is of utmost importance and thus should be done regularly.

One way of doing daily planning is developing lesson plans. Both the terms are the same and help us to plan effectively for the teaching-learning process. Lesson plan is a guide that helps us to plan our day effectively. It gives us an overview of the task to be done and the learning outcomes to be achieved. Lesson planning is at the heart of being an effective teacher as it allows teachers to evaluate their own knowledge in regard to the content being taught.

Therefore, it is an important process that will help enhance the efficiency of the teaching- learning process. Thus the important aspects of a lesson plan include; name of the theme/concept, rationale,  learning outcomes, instructions that will include the activities to be done, questions to be asked and the flow and last but the most important, assessment.

  1. Selection of theme/concept: It is very important that we select the theme or the concept to be taught in the class. It is preferable that we plan ourselves thematically as it helps us to integrate various domains and disciplines that will lead to a transdisciplinary approach, as NCF 2005 also focuses on and this will thus help us to achieve different learning outcomes in a shorter time.
  2. Learning outcomes: It is of utmost importance that we as educators identify our learning outcomes to be achieved during a session. These learning  objectives will easily help us to  identify the lesson’s drawbacks and it’s strength. It will lay the foundation for our teaching- learning process. Learning objectives should be relevant and well aligned with the concept/theme to be taught as then it  will help us to   integrate and follow a transdisciplinary approach.
  3. Instructions: The next step after we have decided our learning outcomes and theme is instructions. Instructions mean the process/flow of the class. It refers to the activities and questions to be asked during the teaching- learning process. It will enhance the efficiency of our plan by selecting age appropriate and relevant activities. Planning well in advance the questions to be asked, keeping in mind the learning outcomes will help us integrate various domains/concepts and will make our classrooms lively and learner centered.
  4. Assessment: Assessment is very important for both educators and for the learners. It helps us to reflect and work on it further. It is a way through which we as educators can improve upon our teaching methodologies. We at NatureNurture emphasise the importance of assessment, not only for the educators but also for the learners. We at NatureNurture keep a good record through Educators Manual and Progress and Performance Profile that serve as a basis for future improvement and helps in self growth.

Therefore, it is of utmost importance that we as educators plan on a regular basis. It will help us to ask relevant questions and will help us integrate different disciplines and domains in a limited time. We at NatureNurture put a lot of emphasis on planning and reflections as to constantly grow and enhance upon our skills.  Schools using the NatureNurture learning program report that they benefit with detailed planning and reflections.
